steering head bearings

Largely simply a pictorial record of the job. Quite straightforward to do, just keep a record of the order the various nuts washerscand spacers come apart so that they can go back in the right place. Luckily the cups weren't too badly worn so athorough clean, new balls and new grease vastly improved the smoothness of the steering.

This is a pretty basic blog of the resto of this little N26. I acquired this as a non runner but smostlyy complete. It lacked a speedo but someone had started to sort it so it turned over and the frame had been painted. I hadn't really meant to buy this bike and probably shouldnt have but it seemed fairly straightforward to get this one back on the road. Here's some general shots of the bike.   Preliminary assessment showed; 1. No spark it will need new points and the magneto testing. 2. fuel tap is blocked... it will need a carb and tank clean 3. Both tyres badly worn so new tyres and tubes needed. 4. Wheel bearings front and rear are very rough, brakes are poor 5. Chain and sprockets are very badly worn 6. Mudguards and wheels supplemental

 The cycle parts of this frame were really quite poor. It was mainly a clean, strp and repaint job although I did need to weld a couple of cracks. I used paint stripper to remove layers of old paint. This is the new stuff from thecEU regs.... doesn't work very well so you need to be very patient. I applied it, wrapped in cling film to keep it moist and left it overnight. I took a lot of scraping and several applications but it did get there in the end. All cleaned, derusted and eventually resprayed. I changed the bearings in the spare hub... the cones section was sl different in design from those in the rear wheel that came with the bike. I found one set of bearings was badly corroded and had damaged the corresponding cup so I tapped that one out of the hub and replaced it with the best "used" cone from stock. I took the hub and old rim with spokes to wheelwise cowfold to have the hubs swapped. In the meantime I swapped the 12T engine sprocket for new.... a job that was w...
